Understanding Your MRI Experience
If you’ve been scheduled for an MRI, you might already be wondering what the experience will feel like, how long it will take, what you should wear, or what happens afterward. We believe your MRI visit should feel reassuring, not confusing. We are dedicated to providing a welcoming, safe, and comfortable experience that answers your questions and gives your provider the best possible images to support your care.
Below is a complete walkthrough of your MRI visit from arrival to results, so you feel comfortable and know exactly what to expect.
What an MRI Is and Why It Matters
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It’s a completely non-invasive scan that uses magnets, radio waves, and a computer to create detailed images of the soft tissues inside the body, including organs, muscles, and other structures. Unlike CT scans or x-rays, an MRI does not use radiation. The technology allows medical providers to diagnose or monitor many conditions with clarity and precision.
Because an MRI can produce highly detailed images, it is an important step in helping your doctor understand what’s happening inside your body and, if needed, develop a treatment plan.
Your Arrival and Check-In Experience
On the day of your visit, we ask that you arrive 15 minutes before your appointment so that check-in is smooth and stress-free. You’ll be greeted by our front desk team, who will verify your information, scan your identification, and assist you in completing a short consent form.
Once you’re checked in, our technologists are notified that you are ready for your scan. A member of our team will guide you from the lobby to the MRI area shortly afterward. Throughout the process, our staff is committed to treating you with warmth, professionalism, and respect.
Getting Ready for Your MRI
Before your scan begins, we’ll review a few safety questions and talk through your medical history. This is standard and helps us tailor your exam and keep you safe.
You’ll then change into scrubs in one of our private changing rooms. Many modern fabrics, especially those containing metallic fibers, can heat up during an MRI due to the magnetic field. Wearing scrubs ensures your safety and comfort, and we offer a full range of sizes for every patient.
We also ask that you remove jewelry and metal items before entering the MRI room. If anything is difficult to remove or you need help, our staff is right there to assist you. Lockers are provided to store your personal belongings during the exam safely.
Getting Settled and Starting the Scan
Once you’re prepared, you’ll be brought into the MRI room and helped onto the scanning table. Our technologist will ensure you’re comfortably positioned and explain the initial steps of the exam.
Will You Need Contrast?
Some exams require contrast to help highlight specific structures or details. If your scan requires it, we will place a small IV before you begin. Contrast is commonly used, and your technologist will explain everything before moving forward.
Staying Comfortable During the Scan
An MRI can produce knocking and tapping sounds while the machine takes images. This is completely normal. We offer earplugs for certain scans, and in most cases, you’ll be given headphones with the option to choose your favorite music.
You can personalize your audio to help you relax and enjoy a more comfortable and familiar experience. Our goal is to create an atmosphere that feels reassuring, calm, and tailored to you.
Before the scan begins, your technologist will review the steps with you and explain what to expect. While the exam is underway, we’ll continue to provide updates on which sequences are being taken, how long they’ll last, and how much time remains.
How long does an MRI take?
Most scans take 20 minutes to an hour, depending on the type of exam you need.
Your job is simple: stay as still as you comfortably can. The machine will do the rest.
After Your Scan Is Complete
Once the MRI exam is finished, we will guide you back to the changing area so you can change out of your scrubs. There’s no need to check out at the front desk. You’re free to continue your day.
